"Think Manufacturing" Student Expo

Karen Tercek
The Expo provides manufacturers the opportunity to promote manufacturing careers to all high school students in Lake County.
The "Think Manufacturing" Expo started last year in an effort to promote careers in manufacturing in Lake County. The Willoughby Western Lake County Chamber of Commerce reached out to collaborate with the other three chambers in Lake County and the AWT (consortium of Lake County manufacturers) to make this happen as a Lake County wide event. Many of our Lake County manufacturers are hurting because they cannot find the trained youth to replace those retiring from manufacturing careers. Since manufacturing is the largest sector of business in Lake County, we felt it was crucial to support manufacturers in their efforts to educate about the viable, well paid jobs in manufacturing. Approximately 25 to 30 manufacturers have a booth at the expo and they each talk to students about careers, internships, co-ops and part time jobs with their companies. As a part of the Expo, we also host a teacher's reception in which we present a roundtable discussion on how manufacturing careers and the environment has changed over the past 20 to 30 years. We are not only educating students and parents at the Expo about the changing careers in manufacturing, but also educating the teachers who also play a critical role in the career paths of many of these students.
